Redwood has been called the "wonder wood" because it does so many
things so well : it has a beautiful appearance, it holds paint and stain easily,
it is termite and rot resistant - the list goes on and on !
Timber companies promoted the tree's many uses, and the public accordingly
clamored for ever larger quantities of redwood products. The forests of the
central coast were cut first, after which the choppers then moved North. During
the 1910s, the "Redwood Highway" penetrated the great groves of
southern Humboldt County : small mills and wood splitting operations lined the
roadside, converting giant trees into lumber fenceposts and grapestakes.
