Gretna Green, very close to the border,
was famous for its runaway marriages : the Scottish law only required for a couple wishing
to marry a mere statement in the presence of two witnesses. The blacksmith and his
assistant used to play that role ! Nowadays, the "smithies" are often visited :
these secret weddings are no longer possible since 1940. |
