White River : where it all began... Viewpoint on Lake Superior from the Silver Falls Bridge. The same place at sunset !
In 1914, Lieutenant Colebourn, of the Alaskan Army Veterinary Corps, purchased a black bear cub at White River, while en route overseas.
He named her Winnie after his hometown, Winnipeg. Winnie became the soldiers' mascot and was left in the care of the London Zoo while Lt Colebourn served in France.
In 1919, he gave her to the zoo for permanent keeping, where she was loved by many, including author A. Milne and his son Christopher, who created the fictional Winnie-the-Pooh, the name his son had given to his stuffed bear, inspired by the real Winnie. You're watching a real act of bravery, as the lake's water is very cold !
