Big, deep, dark and dripping cave, with pools of very cold water.
The Kalalau Trail is basically the same ancient route used by the Hawai'ians who once lived in these remote north coast valleys.
Hanakapiai has a sandy beach in the summer.
In the winter, the sand washes out, and it becomes a beach of boulders, some of them sparkling with tiny olivine crystals.
The western side of the beach has a small cave with dripping water and a miniature fern grotto.
Hiking back in the heat and looking for some shade...
Commonly called "the beach at the end of the road", which it is really !! In Hawai'ian, its name is "Makana", which means "gift".
You can see the coral reef, which makes snorkel very good with a great variety of tropical fish.
Back to Haena Beach Park, after this 4 mile hike.
Cross-stitching a small pattern for my friend Marie.
