From a height of 4000 feet, you can look deep in the green depths of the valley and straight out to the sea.
More than 90% of Hawai'i's native flora and fauna are found nowhere else on earth. Some still resemble their ancestors, as the Hawai'ian goose, or "Nene", looking like the Canadian goose, but whose feet have adapted to walking on lava by losing most of their webbing.
This jungle fowl is a non-native bird brought to Hawai'i by early Polynesian settlers. The colorful species now survives solely on Kaua'i. Not shy of people, they congregate in parking lots, looking for handouts.
Both of us were exhausted because of the heat, the lack of water (we hadn't planned to walk so far at the beginning...) and the idea of hiking for almost the same distance, as we had to go back to the campground, without water...
