Two sets of lines form the Checkerboard pattern :
1. horizontal lines : layers of wind-blown sand that buit up into sand
dunes.
2. vertical lines (less common) : stress and erosion on the rock
surface (expansion/contraction, temperature changes, wetting/drying...)
