Mt Rainier National Park Mount Rainier is an active volcano currently in a quiet state. Steam issuing from the cracks in the water has melted snow caves that occasionnally provide havens for marconed climbers. When the mountain will erupt next is unknown...
"But where is the "Dead Horse Creek Trail" ? I can't see anything with all this snow !" Glaciers and perennial snow cover approximatively 36 square miles on Mt Rainier. Their total volume is about 1 cubic mile - as much ice as exists on all other Cascade volcanoes combined and enough to fill Seattle's Kingdome 2,300 times. Snowfall at Paradise often exceeds 600 inches annually. Despite warm temperatures, much of it remains at summer's end and transforms into glacier ice.
